Abstract
This study examines the language requirements university graduates in French-speaking Belgium must meet in order to increase their job opportunities. We wanted to find out which languages higher education graduates need to know and which level/skills are expected. To answer these questions, a double analysis was conducted. 3300 UCLouvain alumni from 2014 and 2018 completed an online questionnaire that probed, among other things, the languages used in the workplace. We then analysed 2362 vacancies published on the UCLouvain career platform Career Center by JobTeaser between July 2018 and June 2019. The results show that mainly the three languages French/English/Dutch are required, although differences can be noticed depending on the workplace or the activity sector. In addition, we observe some differences between the expectations of the employers and the actual language use of the graduates.
