Abstract
(en) Looking at the mechanics of marriage in all its failures allows us to grasp the full complexity of the choices and reversals that presided over the union of a man and a woman who were nothing less than ordinary. There are two cases to consider: unfulfilled plans and broken marriages. This puts the notion of a successful, if not happy, dynastic alliance into perspective. A certain lability seemed to be the norm, reflecting the shifting nature of political necessities.
