Abstract
By observing the practice of folk bals in Belgium, we explore the possibility of a musical culture in line with the transition project. Folk bals are modern dancing events inspired by pre-industrial rural festivities. The transition initiatives movement aims at transforming local societies through bottom-up initiatives in order to reach a higher resilience in response to future environmental and social shocks. We derive six features that appear to characterize resilient musical practices: (1) low ecological footprint, (2) increasing of social well-being, (3) socially-oriented economic models, (4) traditional or local anchorage, (5) recurrence and fun, and (6) degree of participation.
