This paper uses three different types of discourse register (i.e., spontaneous conversation, media dialog, and written Chinese) to investigate the transitivity features of the common verb nong in Chinese. Our findings show that low transitivity in the sense of Hopper and Thompson (1980) is prominent in discourse. We use the concept of subjectivity to explain the findings, arguing that simply treating nong as a substitute of an otherwise highly transitive verb is not supported by our empirical data. This study demonstrates that it is important to appeal to corpora for linguistic evidence.
