Abstract
(en) The discovery of a large room with a Roman cement pavement containing limestone tiles in the Aiano villa (San Gimignano, Siena) was already the topic of several AISCOM talks presented by us. Here we describe the results of the direct and instrumental survey that was carried out during our last excavation campaigns. From the analysis of the dimensions of the floor, it was possible to deduce some features of both the general decoration plan and its realization. The analysis of the decoration revealed the existence of a compositive module that was employed to create the internal squares; on the other hand, it is not possible to identify the presence of a similar module when the larger, external squares are considered. Overall, it seems that the artisans adapted the composition to the pre-existences, with the exception of the internal squares to create which, instead, they employed a module derived from the Roman foot. If confirmed, this would point-out a rushed implementation of the project, completed by using low-quality materials and carried out by artisans not always well versed for the task, yet
