(en) In his doctoral thesis on the parable of the Bad Tenants, Michel Hubaut had to face the difficulty of appreciating the sending of the Son to the murderous husbandmen, which is related to the broader issue of the “necessity” of Christ’s suffering. This article examines the history of the readings of this formula “The Son of Man must suffer”, shows that it was not predominantly understood as a glorification of suffering, as a certain prejudice about the past would lead one to believe, and questions the difficulty of welcoming it today.
