Abstract
Research in history focused on the real-life, this doctorate explores the world of cloistred nuns in the 19th et 20th centuries-Belgium. Two orders have been selected : the clarisse and the carmelite nuns, who were the most successful cloistred orders in our country at this time. The first part gives a view over all the contemplative cloisters of women and points the characteristics of the clarisse and the carmelite fundations. To study the inner live, we have choosed four convents : the carmel of Jambes (1836-until today) ; the carmel of Floreffe (1091-until today) ; the clarisse of Malonne (1902-until today) ; the clarisse of Saint-Servais (1911-1992). This investigation inside the cloisters follows two logics : one is centred on the over-ruled collective project; the other is more concerned with the persons, their life and their motivations.
