- (en) Liturgy is one of the two major locations of the identity of the church community; it is indeed the principal expression of the local church (cf. SC 41b and 42a, cf. 26b). The church presents herself as a visible space with its ministries at its centre. That which plays out in the liturgy is that which works out in the life of the church. At the moment of raising questions about the participation of deacons in the liturgy, it is time to ask what we can see there of their ministry. At the same time we can ask what the liturgy gives them for living at the service of the church and its mission. In their liturgical function, what is it that engages them for the exercise of their ministry to the benefit of the church community and the proclamation of the gospel? My remarks will focus on the participation of deacons in the Eucharistic liturgy. The permanent diaconate is still too much perceived to be at the margin of the priesthood. This does not allow us to understand the daily ministry of deacons. I will bring out five important marks of their liturgical function and their consequences in this area.
