- Initially conceived as a colonial instrument for the benefit of British boys and girls in the metropole at the turn of the twentieth century, Scouting and Guiding rapidly became popular amongst indigenous children in the colony. However, little is known about the development and the evolution of these global youth movements in the colonies during the imperial period, and extant literature remains elusive on these areas of research. In order to remedy these gaps in our understanding, this paper delves into the history of the development of Scouting and Guiding in British Malaya and concentrates upon the food and material cultures of these two youth movements in order to examine social relations and interactions between "rulers" and "ruled" in the colonial era. It analyses the cross-cultural perspectives and impressions of Europeans and Asians through the activities of Scouting and Guiding in the colony of British Malaya. In particular, we focus our discussion upon the social and cultural constructions of alterity based upon the activities of Scouts and Guides, such as cooking in the great outdoors. Furthermore, we explore the ways in which gendered norms were also constructed, negotiated and developed as part of the interactions between colonials and colonised in the framework of Scouting and Guiding in British Malaya.
