Abstract
Does transparency deserve to be praised? Does it need to be promoted? Yes, on both counts, is the widespread conviction today, albeit one that does not go unchallenged. While claiming to be neutral—it is sometimes pointed out—transparency is necessarily framed in a biased way; it is meant to increase trust but actually reduces it; it is closely linked to surveillance and to Michel Foucault’s idea of internalized self-control; it is used as an excuse for deregulation.
