Abstract
(en) The impressive rise of foreign direct investment in Europe during the past decade has taken several forms, such as expansion of existing operations and creation of new European subsidiaries and affiliates, but most frequently it has involved acquisition of interest in companies domiciled in the European Economic Community (EEC) or entry into joint ventures with EEC enterprises. The possible effects of such investments on the European economy in general have been discussed at length, but no clear cut conclusions have been reached. As far as competition is concerned, it has been noted that the entrance of new enterprise can have a positive effect on productivity and prices by breaking up a local monopoly or increasing competition in an oligopolistic structure, and by introducing new techniques, processes, designs, products, and services.
