- This chapter explores the intertwined evolution of two different ideas over the past century - that of the “territory,” which has been reshaped and redefined in the field of architecture and urbanism, and that of the “digital,” which, while becoming dominant, has been an influence on territorial studies. Although “territory” has emerged as the large-scale subject from which to observe the processes of urbanisation and landscape, questions about its representation are a key to understanding its interaction with the emerging field of the “digital.” It is thus through the representation of “territory” that this chapter conjugates digital and territorial turns. More specifically, we observe the cartographies produced by architects and urbanists to define such transformations. With this notion, we situate cartography as oriented not only to represent but also to transform the object of representation - the territory itself. The digital evolution of transformative cartographies rises from two parallel paths, one concerned with emerging physical territorial dimensions and the second focused on emerging technologies. These paths have converged and diverged over decades, and after crossing during the 1980s and 1990s, a forking path seems a better metaphor to distinguish the most recent experiences of territorial and digital transformations.
