Abstract
(en) Two or three mandibular deciduous left molars in 8 dogs aged form 13 to 16 weeks were treated endodontically and filled with zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE), in order to perform an overfilling contact with the dental follicle (DF) od developing permanent premolars. Animals were sacrified weekly form the 16th to the 20th week. Undecalcified sections of mandible were obtained after embedding in methyl methacrylate and cutting with a special diamond saw. The sections were stained with 1% aqueous solution of methylene blue for ordinary light microscopy. The observations show that ZOE, in close contact with the DF of erupting premolars, induces variable inflammatory reactions. At the time of treatment, these reactions are intense, provoking epithelial proliferation. With time, inflammatory infiltration decreased when ZOE has been surrounded by a fibrotic layer, stained by methylene blue. Inflammation may also become more pronounced leading to follicular cells necrosis. Most marked reactions were associated with a failure of eruption. Root lengthening then proceeds by a basal bone resorption and interradicular bone accommodation with rather thick trabeculae of women bone
