In this chapter, Claes and Mallefet explore in new detail the evolution and behavioral ecology of bioluminescence in deep-water sharks, a diverse assemblage of species that demonstrate the adaptive nature of light production in the dark oceanic waters. With a finer taxonomic focus, Chapter IX will cover the topics of previous chapters in more depth and contextualize the physiological and morphological properties of bioluminescent sharks within their repertoire of fascinating behaviors that surround light production. It is now understood that neuronal pathways alone do not control bioluminescent reactions in fish.
