- Abstract
- This thesis explores Axel Honneth's and Judith Butler's works and questions their respective understanding of social transformation as well as the critical tools they use to comprehend it. The first part of the thesis critically assesses Honneth’s theory of recognition as it seeks to describe and retrospectively reconstruct the practical constitution of struggles for recognition and of social movements. This study yet proposes to rethink the methods and aims of Axel Honneth's critical theory in favour of a paradigm shift which finds its inspiration in Judith Butler's work; rather than seeking to establish strong criteria and being highly transcendental, social critique becomes deconstructive and agonistic. This shift introduces a fundamentally differentiated understanding of the relation to social norms, of the practical context of criticism, and of politics and ethics. The second part of the thesis revisits Judith Butler's journey through the prism of this shift and pays particular attention to the tools she develops for a critique of subjection and a rethinking of the processes of social transformation in their practical context as well as of their implications on the concept of collectivity. In exploring Butler's poststructuralist critique of identity, her theory of invisibility and social vulnerability, and her use of psychoanalytic themes in critical theory, this thesis identifies and opens new perspectives on the contemporary modalities of political action and on its critical tools.
