The clapper electromagnet is well known for its advantages regarding the significant force, manufacturing simplicity, robustness and not the last, the low price. Its applications are mostly in accordance with the highlighted advantages: fast and powerful 'drive', for short displacements. The use of such type of electromagnet in order to obtain controllable movements (position, speed) is, in our opinion, an uncommon application, due to the strong non-linearity of the developed force versus the air-gap. The paper deals with different command possibilities studied in order to obtain a fast, powerful and controllable actuator, in accordance with the application's requirements. All the described command types were experimentally studied, by using the facilities offered by a DS1102 dSPACE system. We conclude to the preference for a current command, which is working quite satisfactory.
