Air pollution, e.g. particulate matter (PM), poses significant health risks, especially to children. Biomarkers can be used to assess exposure and monitor respiratory health effects. Serum (S-) protein biomarkers are commonly used, with S-CC16 being associated with increased lung epithelium permeability after short-term PM exposure. This PhD study investigated the use of urinary CC16 (U-CC16) as noninvasive biomarker to detect respiratory effects in children recently exposed to PM. U-CC16 was shown to be a potential noninvasive and hence surrogate biomarker for S-CC16. An integrated approach was proposed, combining renal-handling adjusted U-CC16 and the CC16 G38A SNP. This association was found at PM levels just below the WHO guideline levels, suggesting that more stringent PM thresholds should be considered by policymakers. The presented design for future large-scale epidemiological studies including noninvasive biomarkers could provide further actionable results to support this.
