Abstract
The authors derive some useful kinematic relations for the measurement of cross sections by means of intersecting beams. These include the formulation of center-of-mass energy of the collidants, laboratory-energies and angles of the products formed in elastic or inelastic processes. Kinematics provides a simple way to reach extremely low collision energies with energetic beams (merged beams) or reversely to convert tiny CM-inelastic losses or gains into observable laboratory effects. As a preliminary step, the concept of cross section is briefly reviewed.
