(en) Starting from the acknowledgement that the similarities between rumors and stereotypes have not been highlighted so far, this article tries to establish that similar aspects are numerous indeed, which throws a new light on the phenomenon of rumor. The demonstration starts with a portrait of the stereotype that shows three levels of reality and seven characteristics, the most remarkable of which being the axiological reversibility of the phenomenon. As for rumor, it concerns only the level of representations but, this restriction aside, it has almost all the characteristics of stereotypy. Besides, it does borrow greatly from the forms and values of the stereotype to convince us of its relevance. But stereotype and rumor differ in many respects : the general, static and hardly assumable character of the former conflicts with the anecdotal, narrative and frequently assumed aspect of the latter. The comparison is further clarified by the comparative analysis of the three phases through which a stereotype and a rumor spread, i.e. the production phase, the reception phase and the relaying phase. Finally, the article analyze the strange and paradoxal seduction of the non-originated and anonymous language, in a world which affirms continuously the value of the empiry and the rationality.
