Abstract
It is well known that, in practice, the identification of groundwater flow parameters by the solution of the so-called `inverse problem' is undetermined. For this reason, many authors have proposed an empirical and deterministic `uniformity criterion' in order to obtain a uniquely determined solution of the problem. On the other hand, it is now accepted by the soil scientists that a stochastic description of hydrogeologic parameters is more realistic than a deterministic one. Therefore, the author uses a stochastic representation of parameters to avoid the nonuniqueness difficulty that arises in the inverse problem. With this stochastic approach, a stochastic interpretation and justification to the uniformity criterion is given. Moreover confidence intervals can be computed for every estimated parameter.
