The archaeological field surveys undertaken as part of the post-doctoral research project "RELOAD" (2023-2025) in sample areas of northern Tuscany, formerly belonging to the territory of Volterra, aim to reconstruct the organizational dynamics and development of the territory between the Roman conquest and the late antiquity. The survey campaigns focus on 'liminal' areas, zones at the administrative borders (northern, southern, eastern) of the ancient ager where peculiar geomorphological characteristics could be detected (geothermal phenomena or difficulties in water regulation, hilly areas about river viability, etc.). At the same time, these are zones of contact and exchange with the neighbouring communities. In order to contribute to an updated interpretation of the historical evolution of the territory, the project intends to collect new data on the ground, starting from systematic surface surveys and integrating them into the publishing and the unpublished (through the study of archival materials and archaeological materials) and to the complex of already known information on the territory. The survey methodology is systematic, adopting a diachronic perspective and a global approach to collecting materials and available sources. The 2023 surface field survey campaign (September-October) was concentrated in the municipal areas of Capannoli, Peccioli, Ponsacco, and Pontedera, in the province of Pisa, on the borders between the administrative territories of the agri Pisanus and Volaterranus. In addition to identifying Topographic Units in ploughed areas, the investigation has documented other evidence of the territory, as votive shrines, and centurial axes still identifiable in the local viability. The new data collected contribute to reconstructing the complexity of the historical evolution of ancient landscapes in the area under investigation.
