Abstract
Externalized behavior disorders (EB) play an important role in clinical practice with young preschoolers (3-5 years). Several risk factors seem to be associated with EB, including a deficit in executive functioning (EF), and more specifically inhibition. This current PhD thesis examines the relationship between EF and EB in young children. This work will begin with the definition of EB and EF as well as a review on the link between these two concepts from an early age. We will then observe the effect of an 8 weeks intervention, focusing on inhibition, on the other EF, but also on the behavioral sphere. Our first empirical study will test the effect of this intervention on a typically developing population of preschoolers. We will show that this intervention not only increased the inhibition capacities, but also had an impact on other EF such as attention or working memory. More importantly, we observed fewer EB after the intervention. We will then assess the effectiveness of the same intervention on a clinical population. Our results suggest that, although an improvement of EF is more difficult to highlight in this population, the parents however reported behavior improvement, which is also observed in a more objective measure (an observation paradigm). Finally, cognitive, behavioral and environmental profile of EB children will be examined and the most discriminant variables will be discussed. The last chapter of this thesis will be a general discussion about our research results. We will discuss the limits and future prospects of this research.
