Abstract
A description is given of the automatic control of a glass furnace. This control is divided into three hierarchical levels. The higher level, working optimization, is based on a real-time optimization algorithm. The second level, process control, makes use of sophisticated control algorithms like weighted minimum variance control, while the third level consists of service loops controlled by simple algorithms.
