Abstract
In 2022, the central history exam for pre-university education (vwo) will cover the topic “Cities and Citizens in the Low Countries, 1050–1700.” This is a theme in which the Middle Ages are particularly prominent. Two of the three exam frameworks linked to this topic concern the development of urban communities in the High and Late Middle Ages. In collaboration with Kleio, the professional journal for Dutch history teachers, we therefore present a two-part commentary on the Middle Ages in Dutch history education. In the first part, two specialists in the field, Minne de Boodt and Arie van Steensel, will shed light on the medieval exam frameworks for 2022. To what extent are these frameworks in line with the most recent insights?
