- Abstract
- Environmental degradation is one of the greatest challenges faced by humanity, but current global politics struggle to implement collective solutions. Former research has suggested a leadership role of the European Union in international environmental governance in the format of regime complexes. Moreover, within these regime complexes, non-state actors have been found to have an active role. Building on both branches of the scientific literature, we aim to study the specific role of European non-state actors in furthering the European Union’s agenda in international regime complexes dealing with environmental issues. More precisely, we focus on the climate change regime complex and on European youth organizations. Indeed, young people have recently embraced the global climate agenda very actively while they receive limited scientific attention. The article is based on the analysis of a database of youth organizations active in the central institution of the climate change regime complex, the United Framework Convention on Climate Change; as well as on interviews of European youth actors identified in the database; and on documentary analysis. On an analytical level, we aim to contribute to the academic debate regarding how governmental entities such as the EU shape international regime complexes through non-state actors’ support.
