Abstract
For cattle breeds, and more specifically for the Belgian Blue, the analysis of data collected during shows and inspections may provide an additional information to the results of selection stations. The present study is based on the analysis of 2.150 measurements of wither height collected in 1979, 1981, 1983, 1987 and 1989, during shows and inspections in the province of Namur. This sample is made of 9-months to 7-years-old bulls. Two methods of modelisation were used to study the age-size relation : the non-linear regression (Brody's equation) between 9 months and 7 years, and the linear regression between 9 and 17 months. Between 9 and 17 months, the two methods are compared to one another. The part of total variance explained by modelisation varies between 32 and 88 % according to the model used and the interval considered. From these models, estimated mean heights were calculated for different ages. Our results are compared to data from selection stations and results of other studies. For the data analysed in this study, the variation, according to the year of measurement, of estimated mean size for each age, is weak : the maximum difference between years is lower than 2.5 %. The applicability of a simple model (linear regression) between 9 and 17 months, allows the use of data from shows and inspections for vulgarisation and guidance for selection.
