- (en) While many studies have been conducted on child mortality and health in the developing world, few have focused on inequalities in urban areas. It is only recently that health problems in southern cities have become a major concern, due to fast urbanization. Moreover, the lack of adequate demographic data did not favor empirical works on inequalities in child mortality and health in those cities. With its interest in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), this research focuses on spatial inequalities in child mortality, individual and contextual effects on child mortality and two of its determinants: prenatal care use and malnutrition. It takes stock knowledge of the topic, mobilize various sources of data spanning the years 1980 onwards (censuses and surveys), use various methods of quantitative analysis and leads to new results. Neighborhoods effects are, for example, highlighted, as well as the importance of interaction between individual and contextual factors.
