- (en) Synodal liturgies as a locus ecclesiologicus, Recent experience of diocesan synods offers a ready-made source for understanding post-Vatican II ecclesiology, especially given that these synods are veritable liturgies. The author offers an empirical analysis in particular of the synod of the diocese of Tournai and of the provincial council of Lille, and uses this data to show – far better than long discourses – what this lex orandi reveals, above all by the choice of places where the synodal assembly and the various liturgical celebrations (Liturgy of the Hours, Eucharist) were held. Several key points emerge : how the presiding took place, expressed in the physical and programmatic position of the bishop, of the general secretary of the synod, and the other participants (priests, deacons, laity) ; the position and central role of the Book of the Gospels, enthroned in the midst of the assembly. In this way the “style” adopted by each synod opens the way to a particular ecclesiological understanding : the way in which the entire synod (and not only the specific liturgical moments) was perceived as a celebration ; the way in which the assembly saw itself as the Church of all the baptised, beyond the ministerial differentiation ; the way in which the presidency of the bishop was clearly symbolised ; the way in which particular ministries in the Church can be understood (cf. the general secretary of the synod) ; the honour given to the Book of the Gospels so as to become the Word of God in the heart of the assembly ; etc. The author concludes with a vibrant appeal for a synodal mystagogia so that our Churches can benefit more fully from the experience of their synods.
