- (en) The Jewish identity of Jesus is a proven fact. However, in Christianity, the ignorance of the diversity of the currents of thought in Judaism at the beginning of our era has led some to place the teaching of Jesus completely in the margin or even outside Judaism and deduce from the originality of his message an argument against its Jewish origin. In the same way, certain currents of thought which can be called “monophysite” have underestimated or even denied the human grounding of Jesus and his Jewish roots (Péguy). In the “post-Christian” milieus, with their latent or overt anti-Semitism, the Jewish identity of Jesus is considered scandalous. In Judaism, speaking about Jesus remains difficult and any kind of messianism arouses fear. However, since the second half of the 19th century, some Jewish scholars have done a lot to reintroduce Jesus into the history of Judaism. The authorities of the catholic Church and other Churches have clearly brought to mind the Jewishness of Jesus. The humanity of Jesus and his grounding in history have rediscovered their place in theology without harming the integrity of Christian faith. Mention should also be made of research on the Jewish origins of Christianity. The affirmation of the Jewish identity of Jesus by Christians and Jews is one of the touchstones of the veracity of the relationship and dialogue between the tow religions today.
