Abstract
In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul does not write a hymn but a praise (encomium) of agapē. The apostle displays a consummate mastery in the art of rhetorical digression. In fact, his praise gives new depth to the solution he offers about the spiritual gifts that his correspondents are so fond of. Paul radicalizes the question of the charismata by offering an infinitely superior way: agapē becomes the criterion of the Gospel according to which all human reality, including spiritual gifts, should be evaluated. The Pauline praise achieves such a global vision that it is also enlightening for many other issues addressed in the rest of the letter. Agapē is undoubtedly the essential element guiding the life of a Christian community marked by the wisdom of the cross, folly to the world, but the work of divine love to believers.
