Abstract
The Jesuit Jacob Balde, who was born in Alsace in 1604 and died in Neuburg-an-der-Donau in 1668, was active mainly in Bavaria . During his lifetime he enjoyed a European reputation as a neo-Latin poet (he is often called the German Horace). His varied and virtuoso Latin work includes a series of ekphraseis of religious paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries . Among Balde's favorite painters are the famous Pieter Paul Rubens, but also two painters who are geographically close to him because they are active in Munich, Christoph Schwarz and Peter Candid. Balde willingly played with the color suggestions evoked by these three patronyms, which refer respectively to red (Rubens), black (Schwarz) and white (Candid) . Colours also appear prominently in Balde’s ekphraseis : the purpose of the present paper is to analyze the poetic, symbolic and emotional value of a pictorial detail present in his three ekphraseis of paintings by Schwarz : the redness of the characters’ cheeks, usually contrasted with the whiteness of their face.
