(en) The semantic system represents our knowledge about the world, objects, biological or non biological, as well as persons and events. It is a sophisticated sytem which allows to categorize objects, generalize to other objects or infering on properties not always visible. At the cerebral level, the representation and processing of such knowledge is sustained by a widely distributed activity implying prefrontal, temporal and parietal regions. Some of them, like the angular gyrus, the temporal pole or the inferior frontal gyrus, have been implicated in semantic processing independently of the category of object. Other regions, in the temporal lobe notably, have shown a preferential activity for one or another category of object. Each of these regions has been associated to a sub-component of the semantic system. It is well known for over a century that individuals presenting with semantic deficits after brain damage may show partial, if not complete, recovery several months or even years following brain injury. Such recovery may have occurred relatively spontaneously or in the context of well-controlled and intensive therapies. In this work, we explored with functional neuroimaging, the neuronal modifications underlying the functional recovery of such knowledge in a patient DL with extensive damage to the semantic system. A better understanding of the circumstances in which the efficient forms of cerebral plasticity occur, should hopefully allow modulating and accelerating the neural changes by favouring rehabilitative procedures which have revealed efficient neural and behavioural changes.
