Autophagy removes altered cell elements, as mitochondria, and provides nutrients during fasting. In skeletal muscle, strenuous exercise and fasting increase autophagy, but aging impedes mitochondrial function. It was unknown whether, in human skeletal muscle, 1) autophagy/mitophagy are promoted by cycling exercise according to nutrition 2) mitophagy is increased by endurance training during aging. We recruited 1) subjects who cycled at low or high intensity of endurance in a fed or fasted state 2) young and old subjects, sedentary or endurance-trained. 1) High intensity exercise increased autophagy and AMPK protein level whatever diet, but fission proteins and mitophagy genes were more expressed in the fed state only. 2) Training increased fission, mitophagy, fusion and oxidative phosphorylation proteins amounts whatever age. As impaired autophagy/mitophagy are linked to metabolic diseases, our data suggest that exercise is a potential tool to maintain body health.
