In "Lullaby" (ca. 1916), one of the poems in his collection The Mad Fiddler, Fernando Pessoa reworked four stanzas from Richard Verstegan's "Our Blessed Ladies Lullaby", originally published in Odes in Imitation of the Seaven Penitential Psalmes (1601). He will have encountered these stanzas in an anonymised form, stripped of title and attribution, in the 1902 edition of Palgrave's Golden Treasury. His reworking of them shows a number of creatively fruitful misreadings of the Baroque paradoxes in Verstegan's original verses, shaping Pessoa's own poetic theme of lost childhood happiness.
