- Abstract
- This talk aims to clarify which conception of autonomy is operationalized by the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (CRPD). I will analyze the CRPD focusing on an instrument that, in the perspective of the CRPD, is crucial to promote deinstitutionalization and equal rights, that is: “personal assistance”. I will analyze the conception of “personal assistance” as it has been conceived by the Committee on the Rights of persons with disabilities, through the lens of care ethics. In particular, care ethics has provided a relational conception of autonomy that allows to show some difficulties that the conception of “personal assistance” proposed by the CRPD and by the Committee may encounter, based on the conception of autonomy that it implicitly endorses.
