Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, a bacterial predator, attacks other Gram-negative bacteria, grows as a filament, and lastly divides into multiple daughter cells. Given its atypical cell cycle, how polarity is set and maintained in the cells? Using microscopy and genetics, I explored the unique and dynamic localization of two polar hub proteins, DivIVA and RomR, during the entire cell cycle. For the first time applied in this bacterium, proximity labelling also identifies new partners for both proteins, emphasizing RomR’s vital role in predation and suggesting a new link for DivIVA with the chemosensory system. While the whole molecular mechanisms behind polarity await further exploration, this study highlights the specificity of the protein networks shaping the polarity of B. bacteriovorus.
