(en) If the importance of aesthetics in the work of J. G. Fichte (1762-1814) is being reassessed today, his pictorial references to concrete and particular works of art have not yet been explored. By means of four major references to painting identified in his work (the 'Night' of Correggio; the Helen of Zeuxis, the 'Sistine Madonna' of Raphael, and 'Hector’s Departure' by J.H.W. Tischbein), this article proposes to re-examine the only text of Fichte explicitly devoted in its entirety to the question of art and aesthetic intuition, 'On the Spirit and the Letter in Philosophy' (written in 1795, published in 1797). His conception of the spirit in painting is then considered in the context of romantic painting, with a contemplation of the work of a figure of whom it is said today that he embodies German romantic art: the landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840).
