- Having set out the principle of the ultimate foundation of reason developed by Karl-Otto Apel, the A. inquires into its usefulness and its validity by confronting it with the principal objections that have been raised against it, notably by Habermas. It will appear from this study that every rational ethics requires an ultimate foundation, even if its extent has to remain relatively limited. Hence the A. will conclude that a rational ethics rests on a decision in favor of reason, but that this decision, far from being an irrational choice, is the only decision that can be justified rationally.
