- (en) [The Partnership Envelope as a Therapeutic Axis for Complex Trauma in Children] Our societies still struggle to comprehend that the place where a child is potentially most at risk of psychological, physical, or sexual violence is within the family. The abuse of children fundamentally raises questions about aspects of connection, relationships, and boundaries. These violent acts take place in a specific interpersonal context, the development of the child is in fact impaired. Herein lies a fundamental paradox, given that the environment that is meant to protect and cherish the child becomes a source of trauma. Taking a clinical vignette as an example, we reiterate some thoughts on the notion of psychological trauma. This includes the effects of certain events resulting in a “ wounding” of the psyche. A “trauma-inducing” event is one that confronts death or the threat of death or serious injury, as well as violent situations, in a brutal way. Far from advocating a framework for dealing with the traumas associated with child abuse, we develop a therapeutic approach that may serve to constitute a relevant axis of support and care for the child concerned and for those around him or her. Working in collaboration therefore forms the basis of the “partnership envelope”.
