- Abstract
- This report presents the results of the research undertaken to meet the requirements of the sub-project ‘Orientation 1’ of the KnowandPol Project with reference to the education sector in Scotland. That project was an ‘orientation’ activity, so that the material presented here should be seen a providing a framework and some background for the remainder of the project research, which will not be completed until 2010. In this first phase, the research addressed the place of knowledge in policy making, through a focus on what policy makers know (both cognitively and socially) and on how they learn what they know. The structure of this report follows the structure of the research work that contributed to it: firstly we present a general background and description of the context of education policy in Scotland, as a map of the territory and its relations, and secondly we summarise what we have learned about a selected set of policy-making bodies and actors, with a focus on their use of and access to knowledge.
