SeaLab: A Cloud-Based Platform for Digital Twins of the Coastal Ocean
Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs) aim to provide dynamic, accessible, and science-based representations of the marine environment to support sustainable decision-making. We present SeaLab (www.sealab.be), a cloud-based platform designed as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) interface that enables users to set up, run, and analyse coastal ocean simulations through a web browser. By integrating multiscale, unstructured-mesh models of ocean circulation (SLIM) and wave dynamics (SWAN), SeaLab offers both hindcast and real-time forecasting capabilities. The platform is composed of two complementary modules. The modelling module allows users to launch simulations for any coastal region worldwide and over arbitrary time periods. With automated mesh generation, default forcings, and preconfigured parameterizations, non-expert users can obtain robust results within minutes, while advanced users retain the option to fine-tune setups for their applications. The forecasting module provides operational forecasts of sea state in predefined coastal areas. Both simulations can be extended with transport models to simulate sediment dispersal, oil spills, or drifting objects, supporting applications ranging from environmental impact assessments to search-and-rescue operations. SeaLab’s design lowers the entry barrier to advanced modelling technologies by providing seamless access to cutting-edge ocean models and high-performance computing resources, thereby bridging the gap between model development and operational needs. By providing an interactive, scalable, and user-oriented DTO the platform enables stakeholders—including researchers, regulators, and industry operators—to explore “what-if” scenarios, evaluate risks, and plan activities in near real time. We will demonstrate SeaLab’s capabilities and discuss how its SaaS architecture aligns with the UN Ocean Decade DITTO program and ongoing standardization efforts, notably IEEE P3501, thereby contributing to scalable DTO development.
