- Abstract
- The research presents the shift from "moral graduality" to "divine pedagogy” operated by pope Francis through the apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia. This shift implies a new relationship with normativity on the path of subject growth. Given that the latter are situated in "concrete" rather than "ideal" families, this new relationship to normativity puts in place a new vision of family ethics that articulates norm and grace in a renewed way on the path of subjects. This family ethic is made possible by and implies a renewed ecclesiology of the Church "on the way out". This is a Church that no longer behaves like a "custom", but rather a Church that collaborates as an "instrument of divine grace" acting in the concrete lives of subjects in the midst of great human limitations. The emphasis on the primacy of grace gives the norm a new "pedagogical" status, both human and theological, i.e. the norm is experienced as a "gift of God" that indicates the path of growth to be followed with the help of divine grace towards the realization of the "possible" good. This consideration of the "possible" good achieved "along" the way, rather than the "ideal" good appreciated "at the end" of it, values the primacy of the formed and informed conscience of the subjects. Valuing the latter implies the important role of the "learning" community, which becomes the "place" for welcoming and deploying the action of divine grace in the concrete lives of subjects. This "learning" community opens the way to an ethics and ecclesiology with a "pragmatic" dimension. "Pragmatic" ecclesiology, seen through the prism of Marc Maesschalck's thinking, is the bearer of a new vision of family ethics, since its main aim is the "empowerment" of subjects and families in "complicated" situations, with a view to achieving the "possible good". The thesis contributes to highlighting the fundamental "link" and fruitful "synergy" between ethics, dogmatics and ecclesiology in the accompaniment, without any a priori judgment, of subjects' path to growth.
