- (en) This text presents Jean-Luc Marion’s approach to the matter of the status of negative theology in relation to metaphysics, a matter that the author develops in the form of a controversial dialogue with Jacques Derrida, with the theology of Dionysius the Areopagite as its background. Our discourse starts with Marion’ criticism against ontotheology (1.) and it goes on to present the contributions of his thinking and his controversy with Derrida. The ‘idolatrous crisis’ brought about by the affirmative way (2.) gives way to affirmative theology, a manifestly insufficient discourse because it is still in the field of categorical predication and the two truth values(3.). The way of ‘de-nomination’ (dé-nomination), gives the chance to overcome the ‘predicative mode’ of language, substituting it for a ‘pragmatic mode’, which appears in a particular way in the discourse of praise and in prayer (4.). The insufficiency of categorical predication demonstrates that no one gives God his name, but rather it is God who delivers it, so that the ‘Name’ is a ‘Gift’ that delivers the “unthinkable” as the “unthinkable” that gives itself (5.).
