This paper addresses the issue of the assumed conflicting setting of 1 Sam 20 in the narrative flow of 1 Sam 18-20. It formulates the hypothesis that careful examination of the way the characters of Jonathan and Michal appear in the plot and are portrayed to act suggests a perspective according to which 1 Sam 20 turns out to perform a narrative function relevant to its immediate context.
