This research investigates the trajectories of spelling errors, from their origins to their possible correction, within the L2 writing process of dyslexic university students. Closely examining how these errors evolve provides insights into the cognitive processes underlying dyslexic L2 writing. The study is situated at the intersection of dyslexia and writing processes, with a focus on L2 writing by dyslexics, a still underexplored area. Linguistically-oriented research on dyslexia has primarily concentrated on final written products, largely in the context of L1 writing (Tops et al. 2014). However, an emerging body of work recognizes the importance of process-based approaches to delve into the intricacies of dyslexic writing, both in L1 (Wengelin 2007) and L2 (Álvarez Cañizo et al. 2023). By examining spelling error trajectories among eight dyslexic learners of English, this research contributes to our understanding of how dyslexia influences the multi-layered processes involved in L2 composition. The methodological approach combines eye-tracking and stimulated recall (SR). Eye-tracking captures participants' visual attention patterns and gaze fixation points, providing crucial information on how dyslexic learners navigate their written texts, while SR involves participants revisiting and elucidating their thought processes during text production. Eye-tracking reveals frequent revisions with long gaze fixations and attempts to correct spelling errors, reflecting non-linear trajectories. SR provides insights into students' intentions and explanations for their behaviours. Dyslexic learners employed various strategies, including the use of online resources for spelling verification, the typing of variants to visualise possible spellings, and avoidance strategies leading to the substitution of challenging words. Despite these efforts, occasional spelling errors persisted, underscoring the complexity of dyslexic L2 writing.
