Abstract
This paper aims to present the first results of a study on the archival record of the Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica concerning the so-called Caseggiato dei Lottatori (V, III, 1). In 1975, archaeological excavations were made under the mosaics of the building; on this occasion, the archaeologists discovered several walls and cementizio pavements from at least one building, destroyed in the first half of the 2nd c. AD during the construction of the Caseggiato dei Lottatori. These walls and pavements, still unpublished, are known only through the archival record, because they were buried shortly after the excavation. The excavations partially discovered two rooms whose function is unknown with cementizio pavements: the first cementizio is decorated with lattice-pattern of intersecting filets; the second one is decorated with a random semis of big white tesserae and crustae. The purpose of this paper is to analyze these pavements for the first time and to demonstrate once again the importance of the study of the archival record
