- This paper investigates innovations in ESL according to Construction Grammar (CxG) and Valency Grammar (VG), two frameworks that largely focus on argument structure, but differ in several respects. Crucially, while VG construes argument structure as a verb-specific property, CxG construes it mainly as a verb-independent level of generalisation. On the basis of an analysis of the high-frequency verb 'make', it attempts to provide answers to the following questions: (1) What innovations does each approach reveal? (2) Are these innovations verb-specific, or are they explainable through generalised knowledge?
