- (en) In this paper, I expose a triple point of view about the use of songs in language class. First, my student's experience underline the often too important stress put on the text to learn a foreign language. Then, I draw upon communication theories to show how to escape a linear approach for the teaching of a language by focusing on the receiver. The use of music is characterized by three elements that can be considered as teaching tools : ubiquity, affordance and mediation. Music is so defined as a « technology of the environment » (Thibaud : 1994), a « technology of the self » (DeNora : 1999) and a « mediation object ». I then present some practical suggestions of experimentation. I also develop an example of the use of the song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. I end my discussion with my point of view as a musician and singer using English in my songs. I conclude that the learning and use of a language cannot be achieved without its understanding inside a culture and everyday life.
