- Abstract
- This thesis is the result of a research in Art and Art Sciences. It develops a double approach to autobiographical and intermedial animated documentaries which address the issue of memory transmission. These are called animated memories. The written part of the thesis proposes an intermedial approach to those movies, which gives an equal importance to the content of the movies as well as to their materiality, always based on an understanding of their production processes. The thesis investigates for example the social environment in which these movies are produced, and explores the performance of the graphical gesture during the animation process. The thesis also reflects on the specificities of a practice-based PHD in the field of Art, starting from the experience of the researcher. The other part of thesis takes the shape of an animated short, La mémoire de Nelly. It tells the memory quest of its author, who goes on the footsteps of his grandmother, Nelly, deceased 20 years ago, and who took part, during 12 years (between 1946 and 1958), in the colonization of Congo without ever speaking about it to her grandchild.
