Abstract
From Vatican II until the episcopal synod of 1977 on the catechism, the pope and the bishops esteemed that the publication of catechisms depended solely on episcopal conferences. During the pontificate of John Paul II, the idea of a catechism for the universal Church and all the local Churches has imposed itself: the special synod of 1985 deemed such a publication desirable and the pope intended it not only for all Roman Catholics but for all those who wish to know what the Church believes.
